Your marketing doesn't need more people. It needs an owner.

October 5, 2026 · By Ryan Williams

I keep watching the same movie. Company stalls, decides marketing is the fix, and hires. A junior marketer. Or an agency on retainer. Six months later there's more activity and the same results, and everyone's annoyed.

Here's the thing nobody wants to say: the hire wasn't the problem. There's no owner. Stuff goes out, ads run, the site gets a facelift, but nothing connects to a plan because there isn't one. Busy is not a strategy.

A junior can't fix that. They can execute all day, but asking a 24-year-old to set your direction is a management failure, not a talent problem.

And an agency won't fix it either. Agencies are great at craft. They are not going to sit in your leadership meeting, tell you your idea is bad, and answer for revenue. No owner inside the building means the agency optimizes for the retainer. That's not cynical, it's just incentives.

What an owner actually does is boring. One-page plan. Three priorities, everything else dies. Saying no to good ideas that don't fit. Picking a number, reporting it straight, changing course when it's wrong. Then coaching the people doing the work until the team levels up.

This is the entire case for fractional. You don't need a full-time CMO. You need a senior owner ten hours a week who has seen this movie and will tell you the truth. Keep your team. Keep your agency. Get the direction right.

If your marketing feels busy but flat, don't add headcount. Add an owner.

The 83 provides fractional CMO leadership for companies that need senior marketing ownership without a full-time hire.
