You're renting your audience. And the landlord keeps changing the rules.

You have 2,000 followers. You post about Saturday night. Eighty seven people see it.

That is not a glitch. That is the business model.

Social platforms are not in the business of showing your stuff to your people. They are in the business of selling your people back to you, one ad at a time. Organic reach is a dial, and they turn it down every year. Every algorithm update is a rent increase you were never consulted on.

I keep meeting owners who treat their Instagram like their customer list. It is not. It is a list of people who once clicked a button on a property you do not own. You can decorate the apartment all you want. The landlord can still change the locks.

And the rent keeps going up in ways you do not notice until it hurts. Remember when a restaurant post just... reached its followers? Now you are paying to boost a post to your own audience. Your own people. The ones who already said they wanted to hear from you.

Here is the thing nobody at the platform will tell you. The most valuable marketing asset a small business can have is a way to reach customers that nobody can throttle. That means an email list. A text list. A stack of names and numbers that belong to you, not to a feed.

This is not new advice. It is old advice that feels boring next to the shine of social media. But boring works. A text to 200 people who asked to hear from you will fill more chairs on a slow Tuesday than a post to 2,000 followers ever will. Reach you own beats reach you rent, every time.

The part people get wrong is thinking this requires some massive list. You do not need ten thousand subscribers. You need the hundred people who already love you, the regulars, the ones who bring friends. Get their number at the register. A little sign at the chair: text us for first dibs on openings. Nobody is going to volunteer, so ask like you mean it. Most will say yes, because they already like you. They just never had a way to say it.

Then the part that actually matters: do not waste the access. They gave you the direct line. You earn it by only using it when you have something worth their attention. A real opening. A real special. A real heads up. Send three useful texts and they will open the fourth. Send three pointless ones and they will opt out and you will have earned it.

And yes, keep posting on social. I am not saying abandon it. Social is a great front porch. It is just a terrible foundation. The front porch is where people discover you. The list is where you keep them. Discovery happens in the feed. Retention happens in the inbox. A business that only has discovery is rebuilding from zero every Monday morning.

The platforms are not evil. They are just landlords, doing landlord things. Your job is not to fight them. Your job is to make sure that if they raise the rent tomorrow, you still have a door you can knock on that opens.

Stop measuring your audience in followers. Measure it in people you can reach directly, whenever you want, without asking anyone's permission. That is the only audience number that has never been throttled.

Followers are borrowed. A customer list is owned. Build the one nobody can take from you.

Rather we just handle it?

Your website, Google profile and social, kept right by text. You stay on the floor.
