Your shop should be selling gift cards right now

The holidays are six weeks out. Your best customers are about to buy gifts for people who have never walked through your door. And most local shops have nothing ready for them.

Think about it. Somebody loves your barbershop. Their brother needs a haircut. What do they buy him? They could buy him a gift card. But they cannot, because you do not sell one. Not online, not at the counter, not anywhere. So they buy him a gift card to a chain instead. You just lost a sale to a business your customer likes less than yours.

That is the part that drives me crazy. Gift cards are the easiest money in local business. Somebody pays you now for work you will do later. No appointment to book, no inventory to stock, no service to deliver today. Cash in hand, and half the time the person who redeems it spends more than the card is worth. It is the closest thing to free revenue that exists, and most independents leave it on the table.

I have watched shops spend real money chasing new customers while ignoring the gift card sitting right in front of them. They will run a discount, buy an ad, post three times a day, and never once put a "buy a gift card" button on their website. A discount costs you margin. An ad costs you cash. A gift card pays you before you lift a finger.

And here is what people miss. A gift card is not just a sale. It is a referral with money attached. Every card that gets bought is a customer telling someone else, "Go try this place, I already paid." That new person walks in already trusting you, because somebody they love vouched for you with their own wallet. You cannot buy that kind of introduction. Or rather, you can, and it costs you nothing, because the gift buyer paid for it.

The objection I always hear is that it sounds complicated. It is not. You do not need a fancy system. You need a way for someone to buy a card on your website and a way to honor it when they show up. That is it. A button, a few amounts, and a note at the register so your staff knows what to do when somebody hands one over.

Now is the time to do it. Not December 20th, when the rush is already on and you are too busy to set anything up. Right now, while you have six weeks to put the button up, mention it once or twice, and let your regulars do the rest. The people who love your shop are your best sales force. Give them something to sell.

Your regulars already do your marketing for you. They tell their friends, they bring their family, they post the photo. A gift card just lets them do it with money in hand. Stop making your biggest fans work so hard to send you business.

Your best customer wants to buy your shop for someone else this Christmas. Let them.

Rather we just handle it?
